I always love learning about my influences’ influences. In the event I’ve touched anybody over the years I thought I’d share my influences just in case someone is curious like me.
1. Walk The Moon - Walk The Moon – I bought this album by chance in California. The only song I had heard off of the album when I bought it was the song “Anna Sun”. Although it’s a great song, I think it’s far from the best on the album. These guys really know how to do indie pop the right way and I think that is showcased masterfully on “Shiver Shiver”, “Quesadilla”, and “Tightrope”. Also, if you haven’t heard the song “Iscariot”, you should check it out ASAP. The way the song unfolds is incredible and it’s well worth a listen.
3. LOVETAP! - Smallpools – A band that’s not very well known from California put out this album in March of 2015 and it became an instant favorite of mine. It’s a very well produced collection of some of the best choruses I’ve ever heard. Swelling synths, a very tight rhythm section, and a simplistic but effective approach to guitar riffs makes this album a complete earworm. The title track “Lovetap!” is a great example and the rest of the album follows suit.
From Under The Cork Tree by Fall Out Boy, A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out by Panic! At The Disco, Currents by Tame Impala, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds by Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, and Songs About Jane by Maroon 5.
On the Sub-Radio side of things, my favorite song we’ve written is a tossup between “White Noise” and “In Living Color”. I find it kind of funny because those are two of the most different sounding songs Sub-Radio has ever released. “White Noise” is up there because of how long it took me to get the guitar part exactly the way I wanted. I just wouldn’t quit on that song until I thought it was absolutely the way I had imagined. That song in particular was about something that is very important to me, so I’ll always have a bit of a soft spot for it. “In Living Color” was a song I worked pretty hard on as well. For me, that song defined that specific sound we had been searching for. It’s also been featured on a few indie music blogs and won a couple of songwriting awards as well, so that’s pretty cool!
On a more personal note…I’m a HUGE soccer fanatic! My favorite teams are Manchester City and D.C. United. I will literally not miss a single match during the premier league season. I’m also a British citizen, but I had nothing to do with the “Brexit”. My favorite beer is Blue Moon; favorite liquor is Maker’s Mark, and I will only drink it neat. I also enjoy anything with avocados in it.
